What are dental implants?
Dental implants are root shaped titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jaw bone where the root of a missing tooth used to be located. Over a period of approximately 3-4 months the implant heals through a process called “osseointegration” in which the jaw bone directly interfaces with the implant providing a strong long term physical connection.
The purpose of a dental implant is to support a dental crown or “cap”, bridge, denture or full arch hybrid prosthesis thereby replacing a missing tooth or teeth.
– Why do I need a dental implant?
It is important to understand that without dental implants, a missing or removed tooth will cause the surrounding bone to shrink away as the bone is no longer required. If multiple teeth are lost and not replaced, more bone is lost resulting in difficulty chewing, which is essential for maintaining optimal health, impaired speech as well as premature ageing.
